Note #61: Consideration When Taking Public Transport

In the name of Allah the Most Gracious

These past 2 years, I've been riding public transport a lot. Going to work, to class or to hang out with friends. All the way of the year I ride it including during holiday season. I am full of complaints, typical me, complaint on people attitude. People choose to neglect the consideration toward others, some don't even know about it, or it's unthinkable to them. I complaint a lot in facebook and twitter with negative vibe about them. Now i don't want to just complaint, i decide to write something to let people who read this know about the consideration one should take when riding public transport.

Let's focus on riding trains. Talking about trains, there are few things i want to highlight. The escalator, waiting boxes, and inside the train.  I think all LRT stations have escalators, it is convenient especially for disable people. Usually people who are not disable also take escalators because climbing up the stairs are too tiring. That's the last thing you want to do when you give off lots of energy at work. But here one consideration when you use an escalator. If you are going to stand and wait the machine to bring you up, please stand on the LEFT side of the escalator. Let the RIGHT side empty to give way for people in hurry, so that they can walk up and reached up there faster.

"Why not use stairs if you're going to walk anyway?", this might be one of the questions you have in mind. Let's just think this way. Walking on stairs will consume more energy, than walking on moving stairs, or at least that's what our brain want us to believe. So if that person is rushing, he'll use the best way to reach the destinations faster. Respect them, give way. :)

*This is crucial at train stations where people often in hurry, but it will be good if you can apply in malls too. :)

This is what i mean left and right, stand on left, walk on right.

When waiting for the trains, there's already waiting boxes at the platform. You can see yellow boxes with crosses inside it and at both of the top corners, there's arrows pointed toward the corners. Where you're suppose to wait if you're boarding the train? The answer is, outside the box, behind the arrows and behind the yellow line. They purposely cross inside of the box because it supposed to be way out for people FROM the train to pass through when they're getting off of the train. Another things is, be it peak hour or not, you suppose to queue up before ride the train. During peak hour, people are rushing to get in, but please, respect those who were waiting longer than you are by let them be in front of the queue, and ride the train first, i mean, do it systematically and don rush like ayam. Give way, it's beautiful. :)

This lady is standing on the right place. Thumbs up.

This one is at KTM Komuter's platform. A clear sign for Q (queue) there.

Inside the train, let say if you're among the first to get in, and there's at least 20 people boarding after you, but you and the five after you decide to take place in front of the door. Do you think it is convenient for another 14 people to get in? Of course not, and you might end up getting bumped into them because it's hard for them to get in and moved further inside. How about you get inside and give way to those who are entering later, so that they can enter smoothly, no need to rush and everything will go faster than it used to. It's a common sense to not stand in a way. Get inside, make way, you're soothing to other people. :)

Oh another thing is using elevator, I was a regular user of elevator at Suria KLCC. If ou know the place you know that there are many white collar workers there, i see them as people with brilliant head and intelligence,a pro in their field. But if you see how they behave just when using elevator, it's different than the image they shown. Standing right in front of the elevator door and rushing in when people going out of it when the elevator arrived. That's not a correct. You should let them out first before get in. No rush, the elevator can wait just by a click on the button. Just make use of your fingers.

I did mentioned about holiday season above. Holiday season means more people will use public transport. More people who are not used to public transport are using it. Then you can see a lot of people behave inconsiderately. Most families with children are among them. It's not entirely their fault to be inconsiderate because they are not used to it, but how could people be so inconsiderate? How about spread the words of consideration and ethics in public place/transport to the whole nation rather than only making simple announcement at the stations. Society's behavior is a face of the nation, so it is a big issue. To discipline our society is important. So i hope our government can see this as an issue to look into more deeply.

As for now, this is only 'consideration', not rules. Those who did not practice this won't be punished. Just remembered that, there are times when you want to have consideration from other people. Why not start being considerate toward them now? What you give, you get back.

InsyaAllah akan tulis dalam versi Bahasa Melayu untuk entri ini. Sekarang malaih eh..
