Note #49: Once Again I Met a Nice Lady from Japan

In The Name of Allah

It was Friday. Usually there'll be only few guys working on Friday bcs for volunteers like us, male muslim will have their working hour cut off for 2 hours for Friday prayer. It'll be one hour loss (i mean the allowance) compare to other days. But yesterday, was unexpectedly many of guys. Some even covered for their ladies volunteer friends who cannot come to work. *I never got anyone to cover for me on Friday before. sobs.

I was stationed at my favorite spot, with 3 guys, 2 of them are volunteer.Starting at the operating hour, we only killed time by chit-chatting, playing around with new exhibits and doing nothing since there are no visitors. After few hours only there are kindy kids and students who come for their educational trips. Until noon, they went for prayer and i, practically was left alone for 2 hours during the Friday prayer. Luckily they are not many visitors so i can manage calmly.

Toward evening, there's mother and daughter drop by our mini show table. My friend was in charge of facilitating them. Then i come and i thought these two people are Japanese. I waited to hear them speak to each other. Then i was very sure. Luckily after they left, i also left to help someone at another exhibit. Then the mother and daughter came by interested with the exhibit. I facilitate them and gather my courage to speak Japanese. The mother that later i knew her name is Asuka, surprise with my very limited Japanese language. Because she and her daughter are very fluent in english, i have no difficulties to interact with them at all. I feel kind of embarrassed speaking Japanese bcs mine is limited. I even ask them, "can i speak a bit Japanese with you?", they gladly let me.

We had a bit conversation, in both japanese and english. Apparently Asuka is going to move to Cebu, Philippines for one year bcs she wants to study English and French there. No wonder she's so fluent, she even learn another language, the famous French. Did i mentioned that Asuka is 44? She looks so so so young i tell you. haha pls ignore my broken english as well.

At first when i tell her that i knew some Japanese, i also told her that i'm going to Japan to continue my study. Wow that was a brave statement, i mentally slapped my mouth. She even asked me when i will go. Then i told her it's just at a planning stage. I think i'll just say it, bcs i want it. Whether i'm really going or not is not important now. Asuka asked if i am a science student, which is indeed true, so she mentioned about the Nobel prize for 2013, there's one Japanese researcher got it (i believe from Kyoto University). I am not aware of this guy, but instead, i'm a bit lucky to be involved in sketches of science event before, i have a name to mention too. It's Negishi sensei. Asuka's daughter apparently very conscious about this kind of thing, bcs Asuka seems not really recognize Negishi sensei, maybe it slipped her mind but the daughter nodded and said yes yes.. it's Negishi sensei.

Asuka live in Kobe. My geography is not that good, but when it comes to few places in Japan i know a bit. It's near Osaka right? I responded to her. She said, it's okay to go to Japan, with your nice smile, i'm sure it's okay, Japanese people are nice. I'm pretty sure she was talking about the acceptance from Japanese if i go there and try to speak with them. I'm pretty sure, but i could be wrong. The short meeting end by us exchanging email address. She's indeed a very nice lady. Asuka wish me good luck many times. My heart felt lighter with her wishes.

I love taking opportunity to have a light conversation with Japanese visitors, until now, i still can recall their faces.
